Top 10 Magic Kingdom Rides for Toddlers

Cinderella's Castle in Magic Kingdom, Florida

Disney World is the most magical place on Earth. Whether you’re a kid, or a kid at heart, there is something for everyone! Making a list of the best things at Disney World would be too big of a feat. So instead, this time, we are going to focus on Magic Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom is arguably the best park for kids. There you will find the most rides, parades, the very popular fireworks show, and of course the amazing Cinderella’s Castle. For this specific list I am sticking with the rides as opposed to experiences; And we are going to narrow that down even more to the best rides for toddlers.

Selected and co-written with my own children, here is our list (in no particular order):

Top 10 Magic Kingdom Rides for Toddlers

1. It’s A Small World

It's a Small World, Magic Kindgom

  • Gentle boat ride through countries around the world, each featuring dolls dancing in traditional garb
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height requirement: None
  • FastPass: Available

It’s a Small World is a classic. Built in 1971 for Opening Day (a replica of the 1964 original, now in Disneyland), it has always been extremely popular. The boat ride is very gentle. It takes you through continents from around the globe, as dolls dressed in traditional garb dance and sing the famous song (written by the Sherman Brothers) in their local languages. For the little ones there is always something to look at and keep their attention. The ride is completely indoors, so it also makes a great break from the heat.

2. Dumbo the Flying Elephant

Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride, Magic Kingdom

  • Slow spinning ride that gives kids a chance to steer Dumbo into flight
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • FastPass: Available

Dumbo is a circus themed ride based on the movie from 1941. While the ride itself is quite similar to other common rides (some within the same park) a few things make this one different. Most importantly, this is Dumbo!! How many of us grew up wanting to see an elephant fly? Besides getting to ride a flying elephant, the look of the ride is really gorgeous. At night when the multi-coloured lights turn on and light up the surrounding water, it feels extra magical. The line up here is really amazing too (and one all parents will love!). When you get to the line you are given a pager that virtually holds your place in line. While you wait your turn to ride, you can take your kids into an air conditioned circus tent where they can play on an indoor playground complete with toddler area! (and lots of seating for mom and dad to rest!).

3. Jungle Cruise

  • Slow but exciting boat tour through Africa, Asia and South America
  • Location: Adventureland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • Fastpass: Available
  • *Eric’s pick for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers*

On this 10-minute boat ride you and your kids will see plenty of animatronic animals such as elephants, hippos, giant butterflies, gorillas, lions and many more. The boat is sheltered from the sun and tall trees and grasses also help keep you cool. A likely highlight for kids on this ride will be taking the boat behind a waterfall! Eric feels this ride is suitable for everyone (not too intense, no scary elements) and is a very immersive experience for children, and that is why it is his pick for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers!

4. Mad Tea Party

Mad Tea Cups ride, Magic Kingdom

  • Oversized tea cups spin, while you control the speed
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • Fastpass: Available

18 Tea cups each carrying 5 people move in circles around a turn table. In the middle of your tea cup you find a wheel, which you can turn to make the cup itself also spin in circles. This ride is popular, and the lines can seem long, but they move quickly. Tall backed seats in the cups make them very safe for young children and turning the wheel for a faster spin is optional if that is too much for your little one. This ride will have children and parents alike laughing the whole way through!

5. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Magic Kingdom

  • Arcade style shooting-gallery game
  • Location: Tomorrowland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • FastPass: Available
  • *Elliana’s pick for favourite Magic Kingdom toddler ride*

Join Buzz Lightyear in the battle against Zurg in this shooting-gallery game. Kids can use a lever to rotate your car from side to side while you take aim at Zurg’s “Z” insignia. When you hit a target, you and your kids will hear beeping sounds and see flashing lights.  You will also receive points.  Points are tallied in red numbers on the dashboard and at the end of the ride, kids (and parents) can use their points to find out their Star Command ranking! It is somewhat dark, but there is enough neon lighting and bright pictures that it isn’t scary for kids. This ride is so much fun! Because it is so interactive, Space Ranger Spin earns Elliana’s vote for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers!

6. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

  • Ride in a giant honey pot through the Hundred Acre Woods
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • FastPass: Available

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride is inspired by the movie of the same name. Ride in a honey pot through the hundred acre woods and meet all your favourite friends along the way. You will see Tigger practicing his bounce, Heffalumps and Woozles trying to steal some honey, and Pooh Bear finally getting is paws on a pot. This is a popular ride, and part of the reason may be the line itself! It is a fully interactive line, with Rabbit’s garden (the picture above shows my big kids working to find some sneaky critters who are trying to steal Rabbit’s vegetables), Bee Hives, a honey wall that lets kids “paint” with dripping honey, Piglet’s house and more. It’s also shaded, like many of the incredibly well thought out lines at Disney. This one is fun from start to finish!

7. Tom Sawyer Island

Raft to Tom Sawyer Island

  • A raft floats you across the river to an island of fun adventures
  • Location: Frontierland
  • Height Restriction: None
  • FastPass: Not available

Now, this one can be debated as being in the “experiences” category instead of a ride. I’m classing it as a ride because of the raft you take over and back again. Fun fact: it is the only ride in Magic Kingdom that does not run on tracks. When you get to the island there are trails to follow, caves to explore, a suspension bridge, Fort Langhorn (complete with secret escape route), the old mill, a treehouse play area for children, picnic tables and plenty more. After a day of waiting in lines, kids may need some time for a little freedom and exploration. Tom Sawyer Island gives them exactly that. Another bonus is that the island is rarely as busy as the rest of the park so you get a break from the crowds.

8. Peter Pan’s Flight

Kids in front of Peter Pan's Flight

  • Fly over London and through scenes from Neverland in your very own pirate ship
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height Restriction: None
  • Fastpass: Available

Peter Pan’s Flight is a fun and gentle ride that has you flying in a pirate ship over scenes from the Peter Pan movie. You see the various characters including Hook trying to escape from the Crocodile. Kids will love the views and the sensation of flying!

9. Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean Ride, Magic Kingdom

  • Slow dark boat ride through Pirate infested waters
  • Location: Adventureland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • FastPass: Available
  • *Ethan’s Pick for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers*

On Pirates of the Caribbean you walk through a Spanish fortress to board a small boat. The ride takes you past towns plundered by pirates, dungeons, the town marketplace and a stunning 12-gun galleon. Throughout the ride you will spot characters from the popular movie series. This ride is quite dark, which may be a little frightening, however I can honestly say I’ve never met a child who was afraid (my own, children of friends, and fellow riders all loved it). The ride is also very well air conditioned, which makes it an ideal ride for early afternoon when you need somewhere to beat the heat. There is a fun small hill the boat goes down; Because of that and the large ship, Pirates of the Caribbean is Ethan’s vote for best Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers!

10. Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid

Under the sea ride, magic kingdom

  • Ride in a clam shell under the sea to watch the story of The Little Mermaid come to life
  • Location: Fantasyland
  • Height Requirement: None
  • Fastpass: Available
  • *Marie’s vote for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers*

Under the Sea is a slow clam shell ride into “mysterious fathoms below”, where you watch the story of The Little Mermaid unfold before you. You will see all major characters represented. The “Under the Sea” song is accompanied by an impressive number of moving, singing sea creatures. The room is huge and you will need to ride twice before getting to actually see them all. Your family will see Ariel become a human, romance the prince, fight Ursula and win her Happily Ever After. Because of the smooth ride, music and the multitude of colourful moving creatures, Under the Sea earns Marie’s vote for favourite Magic Kingdom ride for toddlers!
